If there were anything that Red Sox fans were NOT expecting, it was missing the playoffs after losing to the Orioles in the 163rd game of the season. With one of the greatest lineups in the history of baseball and high hopes entering the season, the Sox started cold and disappointed most of the Boston fans. Fortunately for them, they rebounded quickly and were the best team in the summer. Unfortunately for them, they ended the season as cold as a naked baby in an igloo and did not even reach the playoffs. An implosion of the team amid the scandal of "clubhouse drinking" led to the exits of both GM Theo Epstein and Manager Terry Francona. So, what did they do? Promoted someone internally for a new GM and went on the search for a new manager.
But who did they end up with? None other than the Japanese sensation, Bobby Valentine. Honestly, I think this is great for them. Valentine brings a light-hearted presence into a clubhouse that seemed tense last year, but he still provides plenty of experience, especially in the postseason with his 2000 World Series appearance. Luckily for the Sox, they probably won't be a preseason World Series favorite, which may take the pressure off of Bobby V and the rest of the players. No pressure in Boston? Well, that would be impossible, but you heard it here first: the Sox will be a playoff team next year and will make serious noise come October.
